If you were driving by the Paola Square last week, you may have seen a peculiar site, a guy on the swing set using a laptop. Hours earlier the same Midwest Connections technician was scaling the tower by the Sheriff’s Office, installing equipment for the new complimentary Wi-Fi (Wireless Broadband Internet) zone which now covers the entire Paola square, as well as businesses and restaurants on the square.
With the help of the Paola Chamber of Commerce, and approval from the City Administration and the Sheriff’s Office, Midwest Connections was able to install wireless Internet so that anyone in the Paola Square can access the Internet for free. Laptops can be used to connect to the Internet and Kids can use their PSP (Portable Play Stations) and other wireless devices.
How does Wi-Fi Work? Almost instantaneously, radio frequency transmissions allow broadband access without wires, providing access that is cheaper, faster and easier to deploy than traditional methods such as cable. A small antenna on the Sheriff’s Office tower sends and receives data from Internet users in the square, which then sends a transmission to Midwest Connections at 1105 Baptiste Drive.
Why is Midwest Connections providing free Wi-Fi? “We wanted to do something that would benefit the community and also help get the word out about our company,” said Rod Silver, President, Midwest Connections. Midwest Connections provides Internet service and Satellite TV throughout the city and countryside, and also installs wireless security cameras, video conferencing setups and Wi-Fi Internet zones.
So remember, the next time you visit the Paola square or surrounding businesses bring your laptop and access the Wireless Broadband Internet provided free by Midwest Connections.
